Members present are: Tim Gabio, Irma May Fernandez-De Leon, Roci Luz Gaton, Elmo Familiaran, Charito Carnaje-Santos, Eva Lynn Abraham-Abadesco and Miriam Javier-de la Fuente

First item taken up was to have the minutes of the last meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada on June 29, 2006 approved. Elmo moved to have the minutes of the meeting approved and Eva Lyn seconded.

Irma May, the outgoing president, made a statement of appreciation to those classmates who attended the meeting, she called the faithful few. After which a host appreciation was shared by each classmate, to Charito and her husband, Martin…..recognition of their valuable contribution to the reunion.

The next item was the Flood assistance to classmates affected by the flood in Iloilo caused by typhoon Frank. Since Joshua has started the campaign for financial assistance to our affected classmates in Iloilo, Tim shared the favorable feedback from classmates with their financial donations. It was then discussed as to how and what kind of assistance will be sent. Tim shared his thoughts on the plan on how to send aid. He had initial discussion with Joshua who had discussions with Jeremy as to the logistics of how aid will be sent. Jeremy’s idea and proposal to help in kind was taken up. He was able to get an idea from how his brother Jerry is handling the aid assistance in Iloilo. Jeremy will receive the money and aid for the classmates will be in kind, the most essential things they will need. Miriam suggested that a group or committee comprised of class 72 members will help in the mobilization of the implementation of the flood assistance drive in Iloilo. Tim said, he will further talk to Joshua and Jeremy. Tim moved that we will send the money to Jeremy and create a task force. Charito seconded.

Elmo presented an idea called Balikbayan Box Project which is a collection of used clothing to be collected here in the US and sent to Iloilo. The financial aid is the short term or immediate plan and the Balikbayan Box Project is for the longer term since it will take some time to collect some clothes and the box takes 1 month and a half to reach Iloilo. The logistics as to the distributions of the donations in kind was further discussed. For expediency, Miriam suggested that we make our collections regionally so we can send the boxes faster. Tim and Val will check Balikbayan Box rates in CA and their respective areas. Miriam has found a Balikbayan Box courier at a very reasonable rate. Elmo and Miriam will coordinate the collection of clothes for the box in the NY/NJ area and Miriam will facilitate the sending of the box. Suggestion of the US group for the Iloilo group classmates to help in the distribution is Tess Octavio and Jojo Belosillo if they are available and willing to be part of the task force team.

The next item taken up was the announcement of the new officers who were elected by the majority of the members of the CPUHS1972 Global Alumni Organization. An amendment of the term of the officers to 3 years was mentioned but it will be checked
with the by-laws at a later date. The acceptance of the newly elected officers was moved by Elmo and seconded by Val. The role of the Board of directors was discussed and was explained that the board will act only as an advisory position and will not have a vote.

The next item discussed was the yearly membership dues. Miriam shared some classmates have faithfully paid their yearly membership dues of $ 50.00 with others paying the next year in advance too. It was discussed on how can we encourage payment and improve collection of membership dues. It was suggested that we will send frequent reminders to collect the dues, as often as monthly.

The next item discussed is the Benevolence Fund. We will continue to promote and solicit contributions. This is voluntary contributions.

Miriam made her financial report and stated that she will email the financial reports to all members and turnover the fund to the new treasurer.

Followed was discussion of new projects. We will continue to discuss the Scholarship Project and define further the purpose, beneficiary criteria and mechanics. Tim suggested as another possible project is the contribution of educational equipment and programs to CPU.

Lastly, the item discussed was about the next Global Reunion. Since this Global reunion did not have a big turn out, it has been suggested that we hold it every 3 years or 4 years or maybe every 5 years and continue the mini reunions in between. Elmo mentioned that since we are already in our golden years, every 5 years may be too long to have people willing to attend due to “senior years” challenges. It was again noted that in 4 years we will have our 40th year after graduation and a very significant milestone. So it was suggested that if we hold the Global reunion in 4 years and coincides with 40th year, we can hold it in Iloilo, a big reunion both attended by the Global members and Philippines members. We will again vote on this suggestion through online voting and discussions.

With nothing more to be discussed further, Charito move to adjourn the meeting and Elmo seconded.

This blog is being typed and posted promptly, otherwise I risk forgetting some of our exciting experiences. The days of having a photographic memory are gone - I used to be able to remember even the minutest detail, I could even picture the page in the book where the detail could be found. That is no longer the case.

Friday September 28, 2007 was "Fly to Seattle" day. We decided to fly to Seattle and drive to British Columbia as the fares to Seattle were affordable and reasonable. Charito and her husband Martin were kind enough to offer to meet us at the Seattle Tacoma (SeaTac) airport. Sammy Umetin also invited us to supper at his place, so that we could literally "fill-up" prior to our drive to British Columbia. Having had recent experiences with missed connecting flights, I chose to drive two hours to Nashville,Tennessee (from Huntsville) to catch a NONSTOP flight to Seattle, having learned that the only way to avoid a missed connection is to take a nonstop flight. Sammy T flew from Austin, Texas (with a layover in Houston, Texas) and Miriam flew from Newark, New Jersey.

By 9:30 PM Friday evening we were all in Seattle: Sammy T, Charito, Martin, Miriam and myself. Miriam was delayed by about an hour due to bad weather in New Jersey. We did not get to the home of Sammy Umetin and Joy until about 10 or 10:30 PM - there we enjoyed a delicious late supper consisting of tinolang manok (with papaya and malunggay), macaroni salad (Philippine style), papaitan, fried marinated milkfish (daeng na bangus), rice. Sammy Umetin gleefully showed us his Manny Pacquaio paraphernalia - from T-shirts to boxing shorts, to a den dedicated to his idol where enlarged pictures of Sammy U with Manny Pacquaio were on display! We also learned that the secret to becoming a good boxer is lots of malunggay (Balunggay in Ilonggo) - this is according to Manny Pacquaio as relayed to his number one fan Sammy U. SSShhhhh, don't tell the other boxers......

The drive to Mission, British Columbia took about two, maybe three hours. I slept most of the way although I roused up enough at the border to know that the guard checked our passports and greencards. Once you get to the border, Mission is only about 30 minutes away, maybe even less on a good day without traffic. We got there in the wee hours of the morning ,Saturday ,September 29. We pretty much unloaded luggage and went to bed at about 2:30 AM. We were advised by our super efficient and organized hosts Charito and Martin that we had to wake up early (i.e. 7 AM) so we could catch the ferry to Victoria Island, British Columbia. I kiddingly remarked to Charito that I did not realize we had arrived at Boot Camp!

We had a hearty breakfast Saturday morning, after only a few hours of sleep: sunny side up eggs, turkey bacon, fried dried Philippine fish, fresh and sweet Bing cherries, zucchini bread made from scratch by Charito, orange juice, rice. (I could not complain about only having a few hours of sleep as Charito woke up a good hour before any of us guests to prepare breakfast.) Then we got ready for the drive to the ferry that would take us to Vancouver Island. The ferry ride to Vancouver Island takes about one and a half hours but we were engaged in conversation the whole way that it seemed much shorter than that. Saturday was clear and dry, a good day for touring and sightseeing. There were a lot of scenic views on the ferry ride to Vancouver Island. We drove around Victoria, a scenic city in Vancouver Island and capital of British Columbia. It is also the largest of British Columbia's 6500 islands. We admired the beautiful homes by the water, drove around the city and visited the Inner Harbor, took pictures of the Capitol/City Hall and dreamed about staying at the Empress Hotel, the hotel in Victoria where VIPs stay. There is a Madame Tussaud wax museum, horse drawn carriages for touring the city, and lots of shopping.... There is impressive flora and fauna - inclduing a deer we spotted on one of the residential lawns, and a wide eyed (think Precious moments eyes) Harbor seal -- we took pictures of both. Lunch was at a seafood restaurant- Sammy T had grilled fish and the rest of us had ciopinno ( a seafood soup). Then it was off to Butchart Gardens where Charz, Miriam and myself ooohhhed and aaahhhed at the sight of gorgeous flowers - huge hydrangeas, giant hibiscus, colorful mums, etc. Miriam was the expert in naming the flowers. The landscaping was impressive! Where were the guys? Sleep deprived and physically drained, they chose to stay in the car and sleep!

We had some sprinkles during our visit to Butchart gardens and more rain on the ferry ride back as well as the drive home. We were starved and exhausted but thanks to Charito's culinary prowess we enjoyed a very satisfying supper consisting of pinakbet, oysters on the half shell, crabs and mussels, tea, red wine, chocolate cake and more zucchini bread. (We had found the live Dunggeness crabs, oysters and mussels at the harbor in Victoria - Charito efficiently prepared these as soon as we reached home).

Sunday September 30 was rainy but we were not going to let a little bit of rain keep us from touring Vancouver, so after another healthy and hearty breakfast, we were off to the Salmon Hatchery. Here we were impressed by the life history of salmon - how they mature, then instinctively start swimming UPSTREAM to get to their spawning area - after spawning, they die (both male and females ). So the next time you eat salmon, there is no need to feel guilty, their destiny is to spawn - and then be eaten (completing the food chain)! We drove to Grouse Mountain where one could take a cable car to the top of the mountain and there enjoy shopping, fun activities, fine dining. It was a foggy and rainy day so we saw no point in going up the mountain but decided this had to be included in our 2008 Second Global reunion. Capillano hanging bridge was our next stop where we survived going across a suspension wooden bridge held up by thick and strong wire cables, stopping several times as we crossed the bridge for pictures. Then we did the Treetop tour where we went from tree to tree by walking across bridge like structures connecting one treetop to the next. This was a good walking workout. A drive to Stanley Point followed, with more scenic views of the water, boats - and many totem poles. We were getting hungry by this time, so off we went to Chinatown where we had a good lunch consisting of house special soup/Hototai, house special chow mein, house special fried rice, siopao with sauce (Philipine style- delicious - tasted like real Philippine siopao). At Chinatown I was delighted to find some fresh lanzones - expensive, but for lanzones deprived me it was worth it. Sammy T found a giant red snapper head that he made into sinigang that evening - he and Charito competed for the fish eyes. Our last stop was Granville Island, where I found some fine art prints at a gallery that was going out of business - at 75% off, I could not resist.

Supper Sunday evening consisted of sinigang na ulo ng red snapper, dinuguan, kare- kare, rice, tea, red wine, zucchini bread and chocolate cake.
No wonder Martin and Sammy T had to struggle with postprandial sleepiness - we were always so full!

Monday we had to leave Mission by 6 AM to be sure we got to SeaTac airport on time - we had a quick breakfast - I mainly had oatmeal. I flew out first at 12:20 noon, Sammy T was next at around 1:20 pm and then Miriam at past 3 pm.

We did find out during this site visit that Canadians are better than Americans in achieving life-work balance. Canadians work hard but allot time for family activities, especially outdoor activities. There are plenty of biking trails, walking trails, picnic areas, parks, skiing resorts in British Columbia. There is also an abundance of trees/greenery and flowers. There is a reason Vancouver is called Beautiful Vancouver. We know you will enjoy Vancouver just as much as we did - if not more. Charito does want me to pass on the reminder that if you do not have a US or Canadian passport, a visa is required to visit Canada beginning January 2008

To our very hospitable hosts - Charito and Martin, THANK YOU for taking good care of us and for taking time off work just to show us your beautiful city. Thank you for sharing your home, time, finances, food, camaraderie..... Thank you also to Andre and Julian, your well behaved sons. Charz, you are among the great chefs of CPU high school class 1972 - I know I have given that distinction in the past to Sonia Calderon, Becky Clemente, Armi Joy Lacuesta, Rimia Figuracion, and Tessie Saturnino. You now join this esteemed group!

As for the code words "Alz" and "Remote Control" - the stories behind these will be shared with classmates during the 2008 Second Global Reunion in Vancouver.

                                                                                           - by Irma F. de Leon

Tattle Volume 4, Issue 4

New Life and Living Hope During a Holy Season - by Elmo Familiaran

Dear Classmates,

It is the morning of Good Friday as I write this. You all came to mind as I reflected on the many deep meanings of this Holy Season in our Christian faith. For me, the Holy Week has always been a season of reflecting on how God chose to lovingly enter our journeys here on earth to give us new life and and a living hope. And everytime I enter into a season of remembering God's journey, I also remember my own journey in life and the many milestones I have passed and companions that I have gained along life's way. I remembered all of you this morning, and how grateful I am to God for blessing my journey with rich memories of friends who brought joy, adventure, serendipity, discovery, and growth to my own life.

And so my prayer for each of us during this Holy Season is that as we remember God's journey with us on earth, we also will be reminded of the way of life that God has disclosed to us in that journey through a beloved son, Jesus Christ. And as we follow this day, through remembrance, the footsteps of Jesus as he carried the cross to which he was nailed, we will also remember to do unto each other that which God has done for us through an only son.

Wherever each of us may be right now, and whatever station in life we are in, may we discover in a fresh way the power of forgiveness, reconciliation and suffering love in each of our lives. This is the new life and the living hope that we now have in faith.

WHY DO WE TARRY BY THE TOMB? HE IS NOT HERE...HE IS RISEN!!

Blessings to each of you!

Becky's younger sister Miriam and her "Miracle Baby" husband Victor joined us at suppertime - Victor who has Seinfeldian talents, regaled us with his very funny real life experiences and kept us all in stitches. Many of us had to run to the restroom to empty our bladders -- we were laughing so hard there was high risk of incontinence with a full bladder....We were certainly glad we were in a private home - had we been in a hotel, several security guards would already have been sent to silence us!

Becky's culinary expertise was once more showcased with a superb Thai noodle dish as well as several other delicious chicken and beef entrees. Supper was capped with an award winning blueberry pie that Becky had made from scratch. There was so much eating, talking and laughter we did not get to bed until early morning Saturday January 27th. We were all exhausted but it was a positive kind of exhaustion!

Miriam Clemente herself is a "miracle baby", having survived brain aneurysm surgery recently. The story behind her husband Victor's being a miracle baby would take hours and is an essay topic in and by itself -- therefore it will not be included here. We will be sure to invite them again to the next Houston mini-reunion. They are a delightful couple and Victor is guaranteed to entertain.

Emily Galia was not able to join us until Saturday morning. She had worked (in San Antonio,Texas) the previous day and had to stroll with her special friend afterwards. She made the three and a half hour drive to Houston and met us for lunch Saturday January 27 at Thai Spice, a Thai restaurant that offered an excellent lunch buffet. Of course she brought her special friend along. Ted Trino was in attendance, as were Becky, Ruben and Alec, Sammy T and myself. We had more food and stories, memories and laughter. We were also all able to talk to Donna Padilla over the phone.

Time just flew - we were all having FUN. Soon it was time to say goodbye - Emily had to go to her sister's house in Houston, and Sammy T and myself were driving to Dallas to visit my cousins. Ted had a family activity to get to. It was time to say goodbye to our superb hosts - Becky and Ruben. Alec, their 7 year old, was a very capable assistant host -- in fact he found my leather jacket hanging in the bathroom, and if not for his quick thinking, I would be without a leather jacket in Alabama (it was cold when I got back - 18 degrees - I would have been sick without my jacket!).

Reunion quiz: who is Emily's special friend? HINT: His name is CARLOS! (Call Emily to find out!)

To our hosts, Becky, Ruben and family - Thank you for sharing your home with us!

Tattler Reporter Volume 3, Issue 3

Tattler Reporter - by Becky Clemente Pascual

Minutes of the Meeting Held on August 4, 2006 in Las Vegas, Nevada

Minutes of the CPUHS72 Association's meeting held on August 4, 2006 at Nene Orlina’s Home in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

DeLeon suggested that the whole body will nominate the Officers but the Program Committee and Benevolence Committee will be appointed by the President.
It was approved that the whole body will be nominating the organization officers and the Program And Benevolence Committees will be the President’s Appointees. The motion was carried with Lillian DelaFuente Veloria making the motion and was seconded by Gil Assin.

4.) Elmo made a motion to change the name of the organization from CPUHS72 North America to CPUHS72 Overseas Chapter since we have global members even outside of North America. It was seconded by Lina Adreda Dureza and carried.
The change of name will be incorporated in the guidelines and by laws and as motion for the correction was raised by Sammy Tolentino and seconded by Lina Agreda Dureza .

5.) Charito Carnaje Santos had a question regarding the Scholarship Fund which was taken up from the previous meeting last June 11, 2005 as read in the minutes. But the question was tabled and discussion was postponed to the next time the body will convene or may be discussed through the email exchanges.

6.) Elmo Familiaran, Chairman, Benevolence Fund Committee presented the draft of the guidelines to the class body for their comments and approval.. Sammy Tolentino moved to approve the draft and was seconded by Gil Assin.

7.) The 2nd Global Reunion was the next item for discussion. Charito Carnaje Santos offered to host this next big event in British Columbia, Canada. The venue was overwhelmingly received and accepted. The date July 2008 was suggested, although the actual presentation, discussion and votation of the reunion dates will be formally presented on September 2006 via internet, email exchanges, or website forum.

8.) A motion to adjourn the meeting was moved by Lina Agreda and seconded by Eileen Plagata Penacerrada.

Submitted by:
Miriam Javier DelaFuente – Secretary/Treasurer

Greeting from the Philippines by Jeremy V. How nice of you to re-echo our Centennial Class Reunion exactly one year after we have done it here in CPU. Di pa Las Vegas pa kamo!!!

Perhaps it is our uniqueness as a class or rather as a batch that we have such a strong bond of unity. Despite our distance and our differences, many of you still try to take time out to say "hello" or "kumusta". Special mention si Gil, si Jane, si Ruth, kag si Roci Luz. Such simple messages bring happiness to us who are left behind here in the Philippines knowing that we still have a place in your heart. What strengthens our batch actually is that we believe in ourselves. All of us are in fact successful in different ways. So indi kamo da magsagay worry.

What we ask of you out there, is that please don't forget to teach your children and your children's children(mga apo kag mga apo sa tuhod) that you once came from humble beginnings. Instill in them the thought that a generation ago you came from a poor country (and still quite poor up to now) and arrived in the US with nothing but dreams for a decent life (the proverbial "American Dream").

Now that you have made it, may you continue to inspire others, including us, your batchmates, that even in our "fifties", we can still achieve something worthwhile not only for ourselves but also for others. Let us prove to the whole CPU Community that we can make a difference. Of course, we still look forward to whatever help that you may extend us, especially those who, inspite of hardwork continue to remain hard-up. In Hiligaynon, "bisan ano ka bira-bira paninguha, pigado man gihapon."

In our siple way, please be informed that "Central is in our Hearts" was composed as a homecoming song with you out there as inspiration. You are the "Chasers of dreams" who "soared high, proud and free." Hopefully, it will be sung each time Centralians hold an Alumni Homecoming anywhere in the world. Please help in popularizing the song. This will be our collective gift to CPU and a priceless legacy to our children.

Again, please promise me that you will strive hard to let the generation after us, meaning our children, remember what we have gone through. That the load of all our trials and even failures were lightened because CPU has instilled in us the true meaning of "Christian Faith," that wherever we are, whatever we do, we remain true followers of Christ. Long live Central!!!

      Mabuhay kita tanan!!! Salamat gid.

Ang inyo kubos pero ma-alwan nga abyan,

JEREMY V.

“I lift up my eyes to the hills – from where will my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time on and forevermore.”
         Psalm 121 (NRSV)

As I immersed myself in these last two days of our reunion, it occurred to me that I have not seen most of you in almost two generations (a generation being 20 years) – that is a very long time!

In that thought it is not surprising to me to see that life has cut a path for each of us that has led us in different directions in our life’s journey. We left high school with our full lives still ahead of us. Now we see each other again 34 years hence, and we find ourselves in different stations in life.

Now we are in our 50’s (and those of you who say you are not, is not telling the truth!) and we stand on a vantage point in life that gives us a vision of the past full of lessons learned. Our lives have taken their own twists and turns, their own peaks and valleys.

However, in all of the multiplicity of experiences that have shaped our lives since, there is and always has been a constant steady stream – a “river” – from which we all have drank, some of us know it and some of us don’t.

On this special morning I want to remind all of us about this one constant stream from whose waters we have drank as Centralians. This “flowing stream” is CPU’s Christian missionary heritage.

CPU was birthed by the Spirit of Christ who compelled missionaries of the American Baptist Churches USA to seek the distant shores of Iloilo. There, more than 100 years ago (as CPU celebrated its Centennial last year), they established what was first a school for orphan boys. This school was called the Jaro Industrial School. As the school grew it also established a School of Divinity, a theological school fed by the great Baptist tradition brought by the missionaries from ABCUSA. My grandfather, Rev. Delfin Dianala was one of the first graduates of this theological school. After he graduated he founded a congregation in the foothills of Capiz, and called this congregation “Katipunan.” In the years to come the educational institution evolved into one of the country’s top Universities and into what we now know as Central Philippines University.

A decisive point in this history occurred during the Second World War, when the Japanese Imperial Army invaded the Philippines. At the height of the war, Americans all over the country were arrested and interned in prison camps. Some of those Americans were ABCUSA missionaries. There was a group of ABCUSA missionaries in Iloilo who chose not to surrender and fled to Capiz to join their colleagues who where assigned at Filamer Christian College, another ABCUSA mission school. At that time, the Japanese Imperial Army was already being beaten back by Gen. McArthur, and they no longer took American prisoners alive as they retreated. A group of these Japanese soldiers entered Capiz.

As the word reached the missionaries, they fled to the foothills where they knew my grandfather was pastoring. When they reached Katipunan, my grandfather took them around the neighboring jungle as they looked for a safe place to hide. They finally chose a location at the bottom of a ravine surrounded by lush forest. They called this place Hopevale. They built a makeshift chapel there, made of stone and fallen trees. They called this “church” the Chapel in the Glen. The 11 missionaries stayed at Hopevale in relative security for almost 2 years, protected and supported by the people of Katipunan, until their location was disclosed by a captured American pilot who had passed through Hopevale and was tortured.

James and Charma Covell were part of the 11. They were ABC missionaries in Japan who taught at the Kanto Gakuin School who were transferred to the Philippines by ABCUSA headquarters in Valley Forge, PA., because of their open and vocal opposition to the militarization of Japan. They spoke fluent Japanese. The orders to the platoon were to execute the Americans. But the Covells, through their Japanese, were able to plead with the platoon commander, indicating that they were not part of the war, and that they were missionaries. The platoon commander was moved enough to make several appeals himself to his commanding officer to not execute the Americans but instead to just bring them in as prisoners. But the orders stayed. And so when death was inevitable, the Covells requested for a time to pray and they were given all the time they needed. After almost an hour, they finally came to their captors holding hands and singing a hymn, and Dr. James Covell said, “We are ready.” They were each taken to separate places and executed. My grandfather related to us that unlike the others, the bodies of the Covells were wrapped in white cloth – the Japanese way of indicating that the one who died was a person of great honor.

Many powerful stories of God’s powerful presence through that tragedy came out of the Hopevale experience. One of those happened during peace time, in Japan. One day the General Secretary of the Japan Baptist Union was riding the train to work holding his Bible on his lap. An elderly Japanese man seated across him was staring at his Bible and making eye contact. Finally he asked the General Secretary, “Are you a Christian?”, to which the General Secretary responded, “Yes, I am the General Secretary of the JBU.” The old man then asked if he knew Dr. James Covell. The General Secretary responded, “Yes, he was a missionary of the ABCUSA and was executed by the Imperial Army in the Philippines.” The old man replied, “I know…I was a member of the platoon that executed him and the others!” Then he went on to say how he was moved by the way they asked for a time to pray, and to return to face their death in peace. This moved his soul so, that after the war he sought out to read the Bible to learn about their God, and later on became a Christian!

I share this story with you not to call attention to the ties of my personal history with the Hopevale missionaries, but to remind all of us of our great heritage as Centralians. We were educated by a school built by God’s love that summoned a group of servants to Iloilo, and on whose soil whereupon it stands is soaked by the blood of martyrs for the faith!

Look at the beautiful muscular hills surrounding us this morning, the quiet majesty of the desert. Look at how ordered and beautiful they are. Even in the harshness of the barren hills and arid sand, God brings forth order. God’s creative love brought forth nature into being; and because it is from God’s love, nature has beauty and order even in its seeming chaos.

So my dear classmates remember, and never forget, the creative love that created the river from which we drank as Centralians. Let us continue to learn from God’s faithfulness by continuing to strive to order our own lives and decision-making in the journeys that yet lie ahead, according to that suffering, self-giving, other-centered love – a love that is ever faithful.

May God continue to hold us together in that love. God bless you all!

Reflections - Las Vegas GLOBAL REUNION August 3-6, 2006 by Irma F. de Leon

I have just arrived in Huntsville,Alabama -- have not even unpacked. My two suitcases are still unopened in the garage. Flew out of Las Vegas yesterday evening, and arrived in Nashville, TN this morning, then drove the 2 hour drive to Huntsville. Managed to squeeze in four hours of sleep and a shower, and was ready to see patients again at my clinic today, Monday, August 7, 2006!

How I wish we could , as one classmate verbalized, have a reunion everyday. I think everybody will agree that the time spent with classmates in Las Vegas was well worth it! Everybody had lots of fun. In fact we had so much fun and were so loud that we got a hotel security guard sent up to us on Thursday evening August 3 to warn us that there were complaints from other guests about the noise, and the following morning as we were enjoying a buffet breakfast at the Imperial Palace Hotel, the restaurant manager approached us and requested us to reduce our conversation volume as again she was getting complaints from the other patrons. ( I would have gladly posted bond if they had come to arrest me - since as president of the group, the buck stops with me!)

From different areas of the U.S., British Columbia, Canada, United Kingdom, thirty five (35) class members of the CPU High School Class 1972 converged in Las Vegas to do what we do best - P A R T Y !! Thirty four (34) years after we graduated from CPU High School, we were finally seeing each other again, some for the first time. No wonder I could no longer recognize Tessie Saturnino - it has been thirty four years since I last saw her, and boy, have there been positive changes!
We had good intentions as far as a morning program goes, but because we had stayed up so late that first evening together just chatting and having fun, our next big get together was on Friday evening, August 4, at the PAGTILILIPON at Nene Orlina's house. Catered by Fiesta Filipiniana, the party was intensely enjoyable, with delicious food, karaoke performances, deep conversations among several classmates - plus the required CLASS MEETING during which the class members formalized our organization, finalized and approved our constitution and by-laws, and ratified the guidelines for the Benevolence Fund. The term of office for officers was set at 2 years, beginning August 2006. It was also agreed that the next global reunion will be in July 2008 in Mission,British Columbia. Our hostess Charito Carnaje is requesting everyone to take a week off! The reunion will last a whole week and will include fishing, fly fishing, clamming, oyster picking, and lots of sightseeing!

During the PAGTILILIPON, T-shirts and mugs commemorating the Las Vegas Reunion were given out by Joshua. Fredgel distributed T-shirts sent by our Philippine Classmates. We were able to talk by phone to our Philippine counterparts who had also gotten together in Iloilo City. Thank you , Philippine Classmates, for your thoughtfulness. We love the T-shirts!

Friday morning August 5 we had the Hoover Dam tour. Mr. Porfirio Mayordomo, who is now 90 years old, honored us with his presence. The group thoroughly enjoyed the Hoover Dam tour. Personally I was in awe of the project and was impressed with how a vision and a remarkable engineering feat resulted in taming the Colorado River and generating hydroelectric power utilized by three states - California, Nevada and Arizona. Truly it is one of America's Seven Modern Civil Engineering wonders. Sammy T. kindly assisted Sir Mayordomo during the tour. I could personally vouch for Sammy T.'s wheelchair manuevering capabilities! The tour bus almost left without Lina Agreda who was buying a souvenir Hoover Dam cap at the gift shop for Sir Mayordomo. From there we stopped at the Ethel M Chocolate Factory where we all enjoyed chocolate samples and purchased some to bring home. For those who were interested, there was also a self-guided tour about how chocolates at the Mars company (owners of Ethel M) are made.

Friday night was the thoroughly enjoyable Dinner Dance at Fong's Garden Restaurant. The program consisted of a devotional led by Ruth Dorillo-Taglorin, Welcome Remarks by myself (as group president), and remarks by Fredgel Padernilla, Mr. Porfirio Mayordomo, Mrs. Evangelica Padernilla. The suprise event of the evening was the proclamation of Mr and Ms. CPU High School Class 34th Year Reunion: Miriam Javier de la Fuente and Joshua de Leon. Bases for the selection: the great enthusiasm and hard work displayed by both class members , and their significant contribution to the actualization of this global reunion 2006. The Crazy Santa exchange gift was fun as well -- Elmo Familiaran and I ended up exchanging gifts. I got the Rutgers University sweatshirt he brought and he got the NASA sweatshirt I brought. Becky, Lina, Racquel Clemente and myself participated in a birthday skit and the June,July, August 2006 birthday celebrants joined in afterwards to help blow the candles on the 50th birthday cake (a delicious mango cake ordered from Goldilocks, Las Vegas, Nevada). Fredgel read a letter
to the class from Jeremy Bionat, President of the CPU HS 1972 Alumni Association in the Philippines, and Luis Espino added some remarks of his own. Capping the event was dancing and more dancing -- featuring our talented dance guru Gil Assin with multiple very capable dancing partners including Valerie Diesto, Miriam Javier, Wendelyn Baloyo.

Maybe because everybody was so exhausted from the previous evening's activities, some people failed to wake up on time Sunday. A little more than half of the group joined the early morning worship on Sunday August 6 at a picturesque park close to the home of Melvin's parents. Rev. Elmo Familiaran led a worship service that touched the hearts of all who were there. Classmates who did not manage to wake up and attend, you missed an excellent sermon shared by one of our own. Then Melvin took us on a Red Rock Canyon driving tour, and several of us enjoyed lunch at the Fiesta Filipiniana restaurant afterwards, courtesy of Sammy T.

It is hard to capture in words the joy of meeting classmates again, the thrill of reuniting with barkadas, best friends, former loves and crushes, the delight of getting to know the spouses and children of our high school classmates and hearing about what has happened in the intervening years... You have to be there to really know the absolute exhilaration that filled the air, to feel the palpable excitement of all the participants....

I know others will also record their memories of this thoroughly fun and memorable reunion.....I declare the 34th Year Reunion in Las Vegas a resounding success. Thank you to all those who have worked so hard to make it so.

Before we know it it will be 2008, so after a couple of weeks' rest, we shall embark on preparing for our 36th Year reunion in 2008 in British Columbia, Canada.

Las Vegas Reunion Reminders and Notes

REUNION REMINDERS & NOTES

Exactly a week from today, we’ll all be seeing each other. I know that all of you are so excited to fly to Las Vegas and get the reunion started. Here are some notes and reminders:

1.) I’m sure that you have the cell phone numbers of most of our classmates but be sure to have 4 specific cell phone numbers stored in your phones. If for some reason you will not be able to find any classmate at the airport or hotel (excuse for not recognizing them) please call any of the following:

              Joshua (805-698-3781) Sonia (770-855-9131) )
              Miriam (973-953- 2485 Irma May (256-348-3127)

2.) Don’t forget to bring your Exchange gift for the Crazy Santa Exchange gift. You need to bring only one gift for this game. Remember that the gift item (items if in a gift basket/bag) will be something associated with your home state or country. That is part of the game……..and the suggested minimum cost is $20.00.

3.) Bring your Red Centennial HS1972 T-shirt. For classmates that didn’t get their Red Centennial T-shirts, they will get it in Las Vegas. We are going to have a group picture taken wearing these shirts. We will also have a group picture wearing our white Las Vegas Reunion T-shirts.

4.) We have beautiful Las Vegas Reunion souvenir mugs ordered from the Philippines. This will be a memorable souvenir for the grand reunion and a great “pasalubong” to bring back home. We have 49 pieces available for sale at cost, for $ 3.00 each. Be sure to buy at least one to bring home.

5.) Bring some snapshots of your family (maybe an album) to share with your classmates. This is a time for sharing memories and updating with each other. We can use one or two of the pictures for our Souvenir book. You need to submit some pictures for the Souvenir book that we plan to give out to the attendees by the end of the year. Please don’t forget to bring your personal write ups or completed questionnaires, as previously requested.

6.) Be ready for an organizational meeting, business discussions and election during the Tililipon night. We eat, drink and fellowship first and then have an organizational meeting. The agenda for the class meeting will be: Presentation of the Benevolence Fund and ratification by the class; Election of officers and decide length of term of office. At present we have President, Vice President, Secretary-Treasurer and Archives and Logistics Director; Decide date and site of next global reunion and open forum.

7.) It would be nice if you could bring your personal bibles for our devotions whenever we can have one.

8.) Again, Las Vegas is very hot at this time of the year, over a 100F during the day, so bring light and cool clothing, a hat for protection from the sun and some walking shoes.

9.) And lastly, please bring and be ready to pay cash for your contributions upon registration for the amount due on the following:

1.) Tililipon Night Contribution at $25.00 per classmate.
2.) Dinner Dance Charges at $30.00/classmate,
                       $ 20.00/adultguest and $15.00/child regardless of age.
The restaurant is charging per head. The discount is absorbed by
                      the organization.
3.) Hoover Dam Tour which is $ 28.00 per person.
4.) Membership Dues of $ 50.00 ( either check or cash for this is fine)

We need to collect in cash because we are going to pay the caterers, restaurant and tour bus up front in cash. For other expenses in Las Vegas, the usual other forms of payment should be acceptable; credit cards, debit cards, cash and maybe checks.

The CPUHS72 Benevolence Fund Guidelines and Criteria - by Elmo Familiaran

Dear Classmates,

Greetings from New Jersey! Earlier in this Blog section of our website I posted a general introduction to the newly conceived Benevolence Fund (please scroll down to a few blog posts and you can review that introduction). Since then I have been working with the officers of the U.S. Alumni Association and the members of the BF Committee in crafting a charter document for the project. It is my pleasure to now present to you this completed document, ratified by the officers of the Alumni Association here in the U.S. and the members of its BF Committee.

For those of you who are attending the reunion in Las Vegas, you have the opportunity to bring your "charter" donations in person as a part of the many rituals and symbols that we will celebrate there. And for those of you who cannot be there in person, your gifts can be sent to Miriam Javier de la Fuente and they will be received with no lesser weight nor importance. The goal of the BF is not for ourselves but for the others amongst us who are in extreme need. Once again, checks should be made out to Calvary Baptist Church of Clifton, NJ. And on the memo line of your check please write "CPUHS72 Benevolence Fund." Your donations will be tax-deductible here in the U.S.

Please read and study the charter document carefully - and may I say, prayerfully. Should you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact any of your officers (Irma May, Joshua, Tim, Miriam) or the members of the BF Committee (Elmo, Eva Lynn, Miriam).

The Central Philippines University High School Class of 1972 Alumni Association in the United States

Benevolence Fund

Guidelines and Criteria

PURPOSE

The CPUHS72 Benevolence Fund is established by the U.S.- based CPUHS72 Alumni to provide grants towards the costs of medical, surgical, death/disability, housing, and food emergencies, and other catastrophic, life-altering needs† of members* of the CPUHS72 Class, and dependents** of their respective households. The Fund is governed by the U.S. based officers of the U.S. CPUHS72 Alumni Association, and members of the Benevolence Fund Committee of the U.S. CPUHS72 Alumni Association.

PRINCIPLES OF ADMINISTRATION

Officers of the U.S. CPUHS72 Alumni Association and members of its Benevolence Fund Committee will provide oversight to the Fund observing the following basic principles of administration:

         1. Determine grant amounts based on actual monies in the fund. Every year a limited number of grant awards will be calculated based on the amount of the Fund’s principal for that given year. As the Fund’s principal grows, so will its capacity to increase the number of grants awarded each year.

         2. Determine ceiling/cap of amount of grant given to each alumnus and/or family member per any given year.

         3. Determine how much balance in the Fund’s principal is to be maintained.

         4. Annual financial statement will be prepared by the treasurer and chair of Benevolence Fund Committee.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

      The following persons may qualify:

         1. CPUHS72 alumni and/or their dependent family members.

         2. CPUHS72 alumni and/or their dependent family members who encounter only the life situations as described above in the “Purpose” section.

GRANT AWARDS

Grants will be awarded on a one-time basis only per year, per eligible alumni and/or eligible dependent family member(s). Renewing of a grant will be considered only in extreme cases and in consultation with the officers of the CPUHS72 Alumni Association and members of its Benevolence Fund Committee.

APPLICATION and AUTHORIZATION PROCEDURE

         1. The applicant or his/her designated family representative will need to communicate their request in writing to any of the officers and Benevolence Fund Committee members of the U.S. – based CPUHS72 Alumni Association.

         2. After CPUHS72 Alumni Association membership of applicant is ascertained, the request will be reviewed by the U.S. CPUHS72 Benevolence Fund Committee based on the eligibility criteria.

         3. The U.S. CPUHS72 Benevolence Fund Committee will then make a recommendation to the officers of the U.S. CPUHS72 Alumni Association for action.

         4. Final approval or disapproval of grant application will be by majority vote of the U.S. CPUHS72 officers and members of its Benevolence Fund Committee. In case of a tie, the President will cast another vote to break the tie.

         5. Withdrawal of grant amount will first follow procedures of Calvary Baptist Church in Clifton, NJ where the fund resides, and such request for withdrawal of money be approved/signed by two members of the Benevolence Fund Committee, with a third signatory in the absence of any one of the stated two.

REMITTANCE OF FUNDS AND REQUIRED REPORTING

         1. Approved grants will be remitted through a representative designated by the officers and Benevolence Fund Committee members of the CPUHS72 Alumni Association; or, where possible, through a personal courier.

         2. That representative/personal courier will report as soon as feasible to any of the officers or Benevolence Fund Committee members of the U.S. CPUHS72 Alumni Association, attesting/authenticating that the grant has been received by the applicant.

         3. Recipient(s) of the grant should provide a brief statement of how the funds were utilized.
